Female Viking warriors say rape baaaad Hagar…

More bogus science reporting given credence presumably because the author likes the narrative. Is this the impact of “Game of Thrones” or maybe Amazon’s “Vikings” at work I wonder?

To start with, out of all the hundreds of found Viking burial sites, the study only covers 13 sites. Plus the clue might be in the title here because “Warriors and women: the sex ratio of Norse migrants¬†to eastern England up to 900 ad” clearly isn’t talking about invading warriors.

But the story linked below sets up the egregious statement I’ve read in ages. But to be clear, the idea of the Viking as raping and pillaging maniacs has already been laid to rest many times over – However it gets a new twist here

“The presence of female warriors also has researchers now wondering just how accurate the stereotypes of raping and pillaging actually are”

Really? Why? Were “shield maidens the proto-feminists of the early middle ages?

“Hacking, killing, maiming is fine – just don’t touch their lady parts Hagar.” – I think not.

  1. There was a
Viking exhibit in Chicago last year and it disappointed me. It spent a lot of time saying “they aren’t what you think” which was rad…but then they didn’t really give any concrete sense of what they were. It was mostly “here’s a bunch of maybe Viking crap we threw together yay”
And the best part was they spent a lot of time explaining there were no horned helmets. Guess what the first think in the giftshop was? You guessed it. “Horned Viking helmet for kids”

I think they should have just changed the label to “inaccurate Viking helmet” and it would have been charming!
