More dubious BBC science coverage – Neanderthals were vegetarians… or so the headline implies

BBC dubious science writing at it’s best again today.

A study of 50,000 Neanderthal crap has discovered an interesting find.

First the Facts

Examination of a 50,000 year old Neanderthal fragment of faeces shows trace chemical elements of both meat and plant matter. It was just one of a number of miniscule traces of faeces discovered in the campfire ashes. All these samples were dominated by products of meat digestion, but one in particular showed significant amounts of plant-derived esters as well.

BBC Version

Headline:Oldest human faeces show Neanderthals ate vegetables

Opening Line: Analysis of the oldest reported trace of human faeces has added weight to the view that Neanderthals ate vegetables.

Conclusion

Clearly the BBC would like us all to imagine a vegetarian future like our simple past, were Neanderthal lived in “balance with nature” oh no.. they didn’t and there’s no such thing as “balance” in nature anyway. I digress.

Oh, and “plant matter” doesn’t equal “vegetables” to be clear. For all the BBC actually know it could have been grass from the stomach of something they killed. We just don’t know. But don’t let facts get in the way of bogus science story!
