Did computer forensics fail on Gareth Williams case?

I have to say that after reading this article on the BBC website, I’m left a little confused.

It seems that;

“Mr Williams’s phones also had bondage websites in their browser history, while a smart phone found on a table contained no data because its factory settings had been restored.”

I think I read somewhere that he had a number of iPhones. So why isn’t there a backup file for the phone? And why haven’t they tried to recover the data right from the memory?

After all Trust Digital did this in 2006!

Or this guide for the iPhone from 2009.

Or this tool…..

My point being that I suspect that the phone was more than just “factory reset”, which leads to more questions than it answers.
