On Tuesday the 13th of September, eminent Nobel winning physicist Dr Ivar Giaever announced his resignation from the American Physical Society due to it’s policy on global warming.
Now a lot of commentators are picking up that this means he doesn’t believe in it, or that the science is dead or that Al Gore should be locked up. Now any of these could be true and helpful suggestions (he he) but the fact is that he resigned for very accurate and very scientific reasons which I happen to totally agree with. Not that I’m comparing myself with him, but you know what I mean.
Essentially, his object to the APS is it’s statement that;
The evidence is incontrovertible
Now, in case you’ve not got a dictionary handy. Let me give you the definition for incontrovertible.
Webster: not open to question
Saying that something in science is “not open to question” should be a red rag to any scientists. I’m just surprised at how effectively climate zealots have managed to stigmatise any previous proclaimers, whilst Giaever remains fairly clear.
Maybe it’s the recent CERN research and the current NSIDC results that show a sudden INCREASE in ice coverage.
The full email resignation is as follows.

Subject: I resign from APS
Dear Ms. Kirby
Thank you for your letter inquiring about my membership. I did not renew it because I can not live with the statement below:
Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth’s climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.
The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring.
If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.
In the APS it is ok to discuss whether the mass of the proton changes over time and how a multi-universe behaves, but the evidence of global warming is incontrovertible? The claim (how can you measure the average temperature of the whole earth for a whole year?) is that the temperature has changed from ~288.0 to ~288.8 degree Kelvin in about 150 years, which (if true) means to me is that the temperature has been amazingly stable, and both human health and happiness have definitely improved in this ‘warming’ period.

I think that makes his position quite clear.
