I’ve had the very distressing news that John LeCarre’s classic spy novel “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is going to be made into a move. With Gary Oldman playing Smiley!?
I can’t be alone in this, in thinking that it’s the worst idea since Gwedo shooting first (thanks Mr Smith).
I mean the BBC struggled to get the book into 6 hours of television and it was superb. So how the hell is Alfred Alfredson going to hatchet it down into 2 hours or so? Presumably by removing all the “plot”.
I guess Le Carre is after some of that proverbial “fat movie cash” while he still can enjoy it. But really, Tinker Tailor is a classic book and TV Series. I doubt that even the usually superb Gary Oldman could ever eclipse the stellar performance Alec Guinness in the role of George Smiley.
Clearly a lot of people think I’m wrong. Well, I guess we’ll see when the reviews start coming. But remember what “A Constant Gardener” ended up like; compared to “The Spy Who Came In From the Cold”
